Mrs. Nicodemus Kindergarten Newsletter
October 6, 2014

Reading: Flowers is a Nonfiction Book. This means the book is about things that are real. Students will discuss what makes flowers unique. They will learn that flowers make seeds and fruits for plants, and that parts of a flower include the flower, the stem, roots, leaves, and seeds. They will also learn that flowers start as buds on a stem and then open to become flowers. Flowers also have pollen which helps the plant make seeds. This week, discuss with your child how all flowers are alike and different.

Target Comprehension Skill: Compare and Contrast – When we compare, we tell how things are alike or the same. When we contrast, we tell how things are different. Good readers look for how things are alike and different to help them understand what they read. This week, challenge your child to choose two items and compare and contrast them for you. We will use the language “I cancompare and contrast”.

Amazing Words: seeds, fruits, buds, stem, bloom, petals
Try to work these words into conversations with your child and discuss them. We will use the language “I canuse new vocabulary”.

Phonemic Awareness (hearing sounds): Initial and medial /a/ – Ex: astronaut, apple, pan, hat, cap. We will not be practicing the long a sound at this time. This week, have your child try to find items around the house or outside that begin with short a sound or have the short a sound in the middle of the word. You can also tell your child 2 words and ask him to identify which word has the short a sound. We will use the language “I canhear beginning/middle sounds”.

Phonics (matching sounds and letters): Students will learn to say the short /a/ sound when they read the letter Aa, and will learn to write the letter Aa when they hear the short vowel sound /a/. Students have learned the letters and sounds for Mm, Tt, and Aa at this point. Ask them to produce those sounds for words you’ve written or have them write the correct letter when you make the sound. Remind them to use lower case letters unless it is a proper noun (name). We will use the language “I candecode words”.

Sight Words: have, is (past words: I, am, the, little, to, a)
Please practice these words at home! Students can write, search for, or use flash cards to read the words, We will use the language “I canread words”.

Writing: This week we will work on identifying nouns that name more than one. We will name things that have more than one and use them in sentences. Ex: dog(s), crayons, shoes, etc. We will draw a picture and “write” about nouns that mean more than one. We will also practice giving our opinion through writing/drawing. We will use the language “I canuse nouns for more than one.”

Math: We began Ch. 3 last week which focuses on representing, counting, and writing numbers 6-9. Students learned the number 6 and this week will learn numbers 7 and 8. Please have your child practice writing numbers 1-8 at home this week. Students will be using the language “I canwrite, count, and show numbers”.

DIBELS: This week you will receive a paper that reports your child’s fall DIBELS score. This is just to give you an idea of your child’s performance when he/she entered the school year. If your child did not meet benchmark goals, they are receiving extra instruction in those areas and being tested bi-monthly to monitor their progress. I will be including their progress monitoring scores as well so you can see their growth. Everyone will be tested again in December and April. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Fundraiser: If you haven’t already done so, please send in any remaining fundraiser packets.

Stuff the Bus: Thank you to everyone that has sent in non-perishable items to help support families in need. We will continue to collect throughout the week.
